Possible Reactions to the Seminary Curriculum:
What they may not have told you before you started....
Seminary education will challenge you in ways you may not have even thought possible. Hermeneutics, Exegesis, & Ancient Languages challenge our minds as well as our faith. Preparing for ordination, participating in "teaching church", preaching your first sermon, participating in Clinical Pastoral Education, encountering different groups on campus who have different "agendas", etc: All of these experiences can rip you open emotionally, and if like many of us in this field, you are a "wounded healer" you should expect that those wounds will become activated.
The worst thing you can do when this happens is try to deny your feelings and/or "pray it away". Remember the story of the man on the roof when the storm came? God sent the boat and the helicopter but the man insisted in "waiting for God". God wants to support you in this journey in many ways, including professional counseling and/or medication if needed. Please do not feel that you are alone, that you need suffer alone, or solve all of your problems just between yourself and God. Rev. Nancy Schongolla Bowman has created a wonderful counseling system at PTS, and her office at Scheide Hall (609-497-7844) should be your first call.copyright Stacy Hoffer, MA, M.Div, MSW, LCSW.
